Introduction to Tai Chi Chuan

Tai Chi is symbolized by the Yin-Yang diagram, which represents the dual relationships in nature such as light and dark, hot and cold. It is the real balance between two extremes that harmony is achieved.

Tai Chi Chuan is an ancient Chinese exercise system and martial art that has proven to be what its name denotes the ultimate of all health promoting and martial arts practices in existence. Tai Chi Chuan consists of a carefully choreographed sequence of slow, light, continuous circular, and rhythmic movements, which are performed in such a way as to stimulate every major system in the body. Regular practice of Tai Chi brings about a harmonious balance to mind, body and spirit.

The twenty-minute exercise is performed without the use of strength or speed, but rather enhances the development of keen concentration and body awareness so that students of all ages and sizes may learn to employ timing and balance in defensive moves against an opponent. The movements in Tai Chi consist of blocks, kicks and punches that are performed in a slow, continuous, and relaxed manner which, with diligent practice, become automatic and extremely effective when used in self-defense.

To practice Tai Chi, one needs to wear comfortable clothing and to find a space approximately twenty feet square, preferably away from noise and other distractions. Students are encouraged to practice everyday, twice a day, once in the morning before breakfast and in the evening, an hour or so before bedtime.

The essence of Tai Chi practice is not to learn a set of movements, nor to become talented in a system of self-defense, although these abilities may occur during the course of practice. The intention of Tai Chi is to allow one the opportunity to become more aware of the natural laws which govern change; not just change in the body as it affects physical, structural movement, but rather principles of change and movement that govern every aspect of our lives and the world around us. The exercises of the practice simply provide us with an opportunity to explore that process of discovery.

Cultivating an awareness of this process is best understood though regular practice of Tai Chi and by incorporating many of the principles that works to integrate mind, body and spirit.

The first of these principles that you will be introduced to serve as a general guide to help understand the nature of Tai Chi movement.

SLOW MOTION - CONSTANT MOTION,

CONSTANT SPEED - RELAXED MANNER

As you advance you will be introduced to other principles that will help refine the movements, discipline the mind and promote a positive sense of self.

This is better understood in context of the rich philosophy from which these and other principles are rooted. For this reason the book, The Tao of Tai Chi Chuan Way to Rejuvenation by Jou, Tsung Hwa is recommended as class time is mostly devoted to the instruction of Tai Chi. The addition of this book will provide a fullness and depth to assist the student in their growth then just Tai Chi instruction alone.

Because the essence of Tai Chi can only be achieved through total concentration and the relaxation of all muscles in the body, everyday worries will be put aside, and after completion of the Tai Chi exercise, there will be an absence of fatigue and a feeling of renewed vigor. It is said; whoever practices Tai Chi correctly and regularly twice a day over a period of time will gain the pliability of a child, the health of a lumberjack, and the peace of mind of a sage.
